Bali tourist tax

If you're planning a trip to Bali this year, there's an important update you should be aware of: the Bali tourist tax. Whether you're coming for a relaxing week at Firefly Retreat or exploring the island’s many temples and beaches, this new regulation affects all international visitors.

What Is the Bali Tourist Tax?

Starting February 14, 2024, the Bali government introduced a tourist tax of IDR 150,000 (approximately USD 10). This fee is a one-time payment per visit, not per day. It applies to all international tourists, regardless of the length of stay or visa type (including visa-free and visa-on-arrival travelers).

The Bali tourist tax was created to support environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and local infrastructure development. As tourism continues to grow, the island is taking steps to ensure that its natural beauty and rich culture remain protected for future generations.

How to Pay the Tourist Tax

There are several convenient ways to pay the Bali tourist tax:

  • Online via the Love Bali website: https://lovebali.baliprov.go.id

  • Through the Love Bali mobile app (available on Android and iOS)

  • At designated counters at Bali’s airport and seaports

To avoid delays, it's recommended that you pay the tax online before your arrival. Once paid, you’ll receive a QR code confirmation that can be shown to immigration officers upon arrival.

Who Is Exempt?

Some travelers are exempt from the Bali tourist tax, including:

  • Indonesian citizens

  • KITAS/KITAP holders (long-term visa holders)

  • Crew members of airlines or ships

  • Diplomatic and official visa holders

  • Children and infants are not exempt — the tax applies to all international visitors regardless of age.

Why the Tourist Tax Matters

Bali welcomes millions of visitors each year, and this tax aims to ensure that tourism has a positive impact on the island. The funds collected are used for:

  • Environmental cleanup and waste management

  • Protecting sacred sites and temples

  • Supporting local communities

  • Upgrading public facilities and transportation

As a retreat deeply connected to Bali's natural and cultural roots, Firefly Retreat fully supports this initiative. Our weekly programs often highlight the importance of sustainability, wellness, and conscious travel — values that align with the purpose of the tourist tax.

Final Tips for Visitors

  • Pay in advance to save time at the airport.

  • Keep your QR code handy on your phone or printed out.

  • Don’t be surprised — this tax is in addition to any visa fees.
